Contest

Contest winner for the G/L cadence contest is Author: Kiernan Kelly who wins $10 dollar Gift Certificate from Torquere Press.

Title: Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell Cadence

I don’t know but I’ve been told
Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell is getting old.
Don’t matter where I stick my gun
as long as I still get ‘er done.

Think the enemy stops to say
ŇI ain’t fighting you, ‘cause you’re gay?'
Who cares if you’re gay or straight?
Bullets don’t discriminate.

By land, or sea, or through the air,
wherever needed, I’ll be there.
At home or far on distant shores,
in the end, my life for yours.

Not trying to wax too patriotic but on a personal note, as a former 82nd Airborne Soldier in the US Army, I worked beside men and women who were living within a prison inside the service not being able to be open about their orientation and still remain to perform service to their country. I was expecting some baudy yarns from the authors on this one but have to say Kiernan hit the nail on the head and for that you have my personal thanks. Regardless of the politics that puts a soldier in the field "bullets don't discriminate."

Movie of the Month

Vincent Diamond volunteered to review this month's movie.

When even mainstream movie critics comment on the homoerotic undertones of a movie, well then, you just know there’s TONS of text and subtext to drool over. Case in point: The Fast and the Furious, the 2001 potboiler starring Paul 'Pretty Boy' Walker, and Vin Diesel, with a special Guest Appearance by the Kryptonics (Vin Diesel’s biceps).

The alleged plot centers around undercover Los Angeles cop Brian O’Connor (Walker) and his infiltration of a street-racing gang suspected of hijacking semi-trucks. To director Rob Cohen’s credit, the complete absurdity of the hijackings is established within the first ninety seconds of the movie: you either walked out the theatre in disgust or you just settled back for the ride. And what a ride it is. Brimming with shiny-things-that-go-fast, pretty people, and surprisingly stellar stunt work, The Fast and the Furious is a dual-faceted jewel: a movie that people with no sense of subtext can enjoy without a hint of irony, and a cinematic wet dream for folks willing to look beyond what’s actually on the screen.

As part of his undercover identity, Brian is supposedly sniffing around Mia Torretto, played by Jordana Brewster. Mia is Dominic’s (Diesel) younger sister, and even her dialogue comments on the obvious tension between the two men. "Everything just gets pulled to him. Even you." In the tradition of "straight" heroes throughout cinema history, Brian demurs but we all know. In Brian’s first scene with Dominic, his gaze slides down Dominic’s back, clearly checking out the goods. Brian rescues Dominic from a police raid, and Dominic makes a guarded reference to his prison time. (Heh heh heh and we all know what that means). When Brian’s police sergeant makes a comment about Mia Torretto, Brian responds with soft words about Dominic. ŇHe won’t go back to prison.Ó All together now—aaaaaaaaaaaaawwwwwwwwwwww.

Never mind the testosterone fueled imagery of thrusting cars, the ejaculation of nitrous oxide, or the emotive grappling at the core of many scenes. When characters gaze soulfully into one another’s eyes, sneak off to a garage to be alone together to make emotional revelations, and one is teary-eyed with anguish at their parting at the movie’s end, there’s only so many ways that can be interpreted.

They’re hot for each other or—they’re hot for each other.

Please submit your movie reviews for potential publication. We are looking for movies with GLBT subtext or text/text. No cheating with porn titles these have to be mainstream or indy films with characters that might be playing for the home team if you know what I mean.
