Felicia Turling smiled and oozed charm into her voice. “That will be perfect, Mr. Matheson. I look forward to seeing you next Tuesday to discuss the proposal.” She listened for a moment and replied. “Oh no, that’s quite alright. I can easily alter my schedule to suit you.” She crossed out several entries in her office diary and wrote his name over them in red biro. “No, that would be fine. Alright then. ‘Bye.”

She replaced the phone on the receiver and gave it the two-fingered salute. “Up yours, you odious lamprey,” she said, giving herself a moment to regain her balance before picking up the phone again and rescheduling the three appointments she’d just crossed out.

Theresa, her secretary, brought in a cup of coffee and Felicia raised her eyebrows in thanks as she maneuvered another client into a later time. “Thanks,” she mouthed.

“No problem,” Theresa whispered, giving her a little wave to attract her attention. When Felicia looked, she pointed at her watch and mimed eating. Felicia nodded silently and held one finger up: One o’clock. She got a thumbs-up in reply.

“Yes, Mr. Hughes, I know it’s inconvenient, but I have a client flying in from New York on Tuesday and will only be in London for the afternoon. Shall we say Wednesday then? Two o’clock would suit me very well. Thank you.”

She put the phone down and took her glasses off, resting her head against the back of the leather chair as she sipped her coffee. She was already perspiring under her white blouse and it was still only mid-morning. It was going to be one hell of a long day.
