Two years have passed since the war, but Sir Kaden fears that his recent
injuries on a mission for the king have stirred unpleasant memories for his
lover, Lord Yanisin. Their once casual relationship is tested as the tension
between them rises the longer things are left unsaid. With some outside
prompting, Kaden resolves to help Sin lay the past to rest, whether the
other man welcomes his attentions or not, and hopes that their relationship
will come out stronger than before.

Searching the crowd, it wasn't difficult for him to find Yanisin. The
dark-haired man was glowering from his official post at the king's left,
slouched in his chair on the main dais as servants fluttered around him,
preparing for the royal couple to arrive.
A brigand before becoming a war hero, Yanisin was far from easy on the men
who followed him and trained his troops just as he had drilled the band of
men he'd led before the invasion. But he sat up straighter when he saw Kaden,
while Kaden merely raised an eyebrow at the sad attempt to look proper.
Kaden threaded his way through the crowd and mounted the stairs to the dais,
coming to stand beside Yanisin's seat.
"You look thrilled to be here, my lord," he murmured. He was rewarded for
his efforts with a hearty glare as Yanisin grunted into his wine goblet and
waved off one of the servants who tried to put more food on his plate. Kaden
smirked. "Has your renowned quick tongue deserted you?"
"I've better things to do than pander to the old bloods," the lord marshal
muttered under his breath. "These polished dandies have never done an honest
day's work in their sorry lives."
Sighing in resignation, Kaden leaned over him on the pretense of stealing a
bit of meat from his plate. "This night is important to their majesties, as
you well know. You might show some joy for their sakes."
"Aye, how could I forget, the way you keep reminding me." Yanisin glowered
up at him. "Worse than a woman with your nagging, you are."
Kaden smiled tightly. "With flattery such as that, it's no wonder that
you'll have a lack of companionship tonight."
The pointed barb was not lost on Yanisin, who had the grace to look
apologetic, though not quite contrite. Well, those who knew him well would
recognize the apology in his grimace. Those who did not, like the nobles
gathering at the base of the dais, edged away nervously.
