Vampire hunter Kellen is assigned to keep an eye on Sanders Wakefield,
romance novelist/recently turned vampire. He expects boredom and maybe some
good, old-fashioned bloodshed if worse comes to worst. Kellen could deal
with a pair of fangs to the jugular, but what is he supposed to do about an
offer of tea?

He'd been watching the vampire relentlessly for about two weeks now, two
entire weeks in which his subject had failed to do anything even
remotely vampiric. The guy revived at sundown like they all did, but
instead of going out to hunt like any self-respecting vampire would,
Sanders Wakefield seemed to spend all his waking hours hunched over his
laptop, alternately typing and muttering to himself. Kellen had no doubt
the guy was a vampire, as he had witnessed Wakefield drinking blood a
couple of times. The problem with that was that the blood hadn't come
from some unsuspecting virgin's carotid artery; rather, it seemed to
arrive in unlabeled bottles -- the kind normal people kept milk in --
every other day. It was delivered to Wakefield's door during the
daylight hours by some kid; Kellen hadn't wasted any time checking him
out because he was very clearly human.
Kellen was starting to get fed up with this assignment. He needed to see
Wakefield in action in order to stake him, and that was clearly not
happening. Maybe he was aware of being watched? But if he'd noticed
Kellen watching him from the roof of the building opposite his, he would
have made a move by now, surely? |
