"You remember me?" Theo stepped closer, wanting nothing more than to take Sam into his arms so nobody could take advantage of him anymore.

"Yeah." Sam blushed as he wound his arms around his middle and looked at the dirty ground.

"Hm." Well, that wasn't a rousing endorsement, but he'd take it. Now all he had to do was to figure out how to keep Sam talking. Scratch that, he had to find a way to get Sam to safety.

"Thanks for chasing them away." Sam looked up from under his thick lashes, the long blond bangs in total disarray. But even they couldn't hide the soulful brown eyes that were checking Theo out carefully.

"No problem." Theo shrugged. "I just hope you don't make it a habit to spend time in dark alleys like this. What were you thinking?"

"I-- what?" Sam frowned and tilted his head. "I went out here to get rid of the garbage and to get some fresh air. But then I saw the kitten and it looked so hungry, so I gave it the chicken."

"And following it into the darkest corner you could find and away from the door back to safety didn't strike you as risky?" Sam needed a keeper in the worst way. Theo was so ready to apply for the job.

"Hey, slow down." Sam's frown deepened and he straightened himself. "The kitten can't help itself, so someone has to stand up for it. Anyway, it looked hungry."

"Okay, okay, I get it." Theo smiled, not liking the distance that had suddenly developed between them. Someone desperately needed to stand up for Sam as well, and ever since he'd met the guy, he'd wanted to be that person. Except, he'd just started his business back then without anything to offer. Now that he was successful, everything was different. He hoped.
