Teague Sullivan is putting his life as a member of Green’s preternatural hill together one piece at a time. He’s become Jacky’s lover, given Katy the go-ahead to try to mate with the two of them, and has proven himself as one of Lady Cory’s elite guard for the hill. Now all he has to do is allow his feelings for Katy and Jack take over in order to seal the deal.

But Teague’s whole life has been an exercise in living without: living without food, living without safety, living without love. Now that food and safety are guaranteed, will Teague learn that reaching for the people he loves can be just a simple? Or will his desire for the ultimate home be forever beyond his touch?

Review

Sue Brown, author of Mr. Plum, writes: Reaching by Amy Lane is the third in the Green’s Hill Werewolves series. Just like Yearning and Waiting this story is jam-packed full of hot sex and humour, with tension that has you turning the pages until it’s finished. Amy, just to say I want more!

In Reaching, Teague is not making it easy for Jack and Katy. Jack and Teague still haven’t turned into full wolves, and the three of them haven’t claimed each other as mates which is causing sexual tension, not only between the three of them but also with outsiders. Jack’s jealousy at Teague’s relationship with Lady Cory is sweetly handled.

Without wishing to spoil the book, don’t be drinking when you read the scene with Jack’s snobby parents. I was touched at the way Jack and Teague supported each other, laughed hysterically at Teague’s response to Jack’s parents and then the aftermath, woah, Amy, that was so hot!

Amy Lane handles humour and sex with the skill of an experienced writer but what I’m really enjoying with the series is how Amy is writing Teague’s story. All through the series is the tension of a man who doesn’t believe he should ever be happy. Reaching shows clearly how Teague punishes himself and how his partners try to help him understand he entitled to that happiness without pain.

This is a short story but one that develops the relationship between Teague, Jack and Katy with pathos and love.

Jack yawned from the chair at the foot of the bed and stood and stretched.  "I’m going to shower," he said pointedly and looked to where Teague was sprawled out on the bed.

Katy was next to Teague, sitting with one foot under her bottom, working on some sort of embroidery thing, making polite conversation.  She’d been telling them about the weres running on the night of the full moon.  They had about two weeks before running under the night sky happened, unless something weird happened to trigger the change.

"We don’t have to turn with the moon, you know," she was saying now, "but it hurts.  It feels like you got to take a gigantic dump and someone sewed your cheeks shut, you know what I means?"

Teague laughed a little, the sides of his mouth turning in and up, and his eyes arching upwards.  Katy had carried the bulk of the conversation  (she always did when she was there) but Teague had simply lain there, tired from a long day running errands for Grace, the Hill’s den mother, and enjoyed Katy’s company.

Jack had been counting on it.

Two nights ago, Katy sank to her knees in front of the Goddess and everyone, and took Jack into her mouth.  Teague watched and approved, and made noises about the three of them binding together into a family.

And then stepped back and didn’t make a goddamned move.

The tension alone was driving Jack insane.

Granted, Teague had relaxed a little between the two of them.  They still had sex, which was a wondrous thing, whenever Teague touched him with passion and tenderness. Jack was still stunned and proud when their bodies slicked up against each other in the privacy of their room, but it wasn’t here let me fuck you so we don’t have to talk sort of sex.

And when Teague was out and about during the day, doing ‘Alpha shit’ as Jack called it, Katy and Jack got together, talked, laughed, touched…

But all in all, they were still waiting for Teague.

Jack stood at the entrance to the bathroom and looked at Katy, who rolled her eyes at him and shrugged.  Three days in her company already, breathing the smell of her body through his newly heightened senses, hearing the throatiness of her laughter in every sweet note of her voice, and he could read that expression.  It said, “I’ll try to be naked and sweating, mijo, but I’ll probably just be gone”.

Jack decided to make that shower quick.
