Illinois has just legalized gay marriage and Danny is
about to obtain a license with his partner Eric which is a dream come true
for both of them. On his way to City Hall in Chicago, Danny meets a curious,
quiet young man in the LaSalle Street station. Though a seemingly innocuous
meeting, Danny doesn't realize the encounter will change both their lives,
in an even bigger way than Danny's life is already changing.

"You going somewhere special?" the boy asked.
Danny couldn't help but smile. He could only answer truthfully, too.
"I am, in fact." He shifted on the seat. "I'm going to meet my partner
and we're applying for a marriage license." The words sent a tremor
through him. Saying them made the idea more real, turned imagining to
fact. The chattering in his head became full-blown hysterical shrieking.
"Oh, wow." The boy's thin eyebrows shot up. "Uh, congratulations, I
guess."
"Thanks. It's been a very long time coming."
"Yeah? How long?"
"Twenty years." Danny chuckled. He almost giggled, really. "God, I can't
believe we've been together that long."
"Twenty years?" The boy sounded impressed. "Wow, yeah. That's a long
time to be with someone. Why'd you wait so long?"
Danny hesitated. The boy didn't seem aggressive even if he was a bit
odd, but if he didn't like it well, shame on him, and frankly, to hell
with him.
"It just became legal," Danny said. "Just yesterday."
The boy stared at him, eyes questioning for a moment. Then realization
dawned on his face. "Oh-- oh, so your partner is…"
"Yes, a man."
"Yeah, I saw that on the news. It's great. It's-- yeah, it's great."
Danny smiled, and felt a little surge of relief. "It's wonderful." |
