Rindae's fa'ithe Justan, the warrior he has given his life to, has
succumbed to the force that drives all Maa'rish warriors. It has taken over
his mind so completely that Justan is trapped within the force. Rindae goes
to see what has become of Justan during his stay at an institution. Can the
bond that they forged before Justan's mind was swept away be strong enough
to bring Justan back to him?

Rindae shuffled his feet, watching
as the gravel of the dead zone became a cement walkway. Walls of chain-link
fence towered over the two of them, keeping the green of nature away from
the walkway. It felt as if Rindae was walking through a zoo. The cloth mask
over his nose and mouth could not keep out the stink of unwashed bodies and
fetid waste. The air around him was filled with growls and snarls made by
patients he could not see.
No, rather he was not looking for them. Nor was he taking time to stop and
look. They kept moving down the walkway until the stir of movement attracted
Rindae's attention. Rindae pushed ahead of Koundaii to watch a figure pace
the length of the fence-line.
The warrior was clad only in the black spots that covered his brown skin. He
was taller and thicker then Rindae could ever dream of being. The claws on
the tips of his fingers extended then retracted as his fingers flexed. He
stomped the length of the fence, sniffing and snarling at the air around
him. As he drew near the warrior's enclosure, Rindae pulled the mask away
from his face.
The warrior stepped away from the fence to crouch between the trees. He
watched Rindae step up to the gate, his eyes wide and pupils narrow. He
cocked his head from side to side, growling instead of speaking.
Rindae leaned against the wire mesh and whispered, "Justan." |
