Dr. Katashi Tanaka may be in hot water when he takes his boy, Tommy, to
meet his family. His little sister, Mariko, is irrepressible and sure to
gossip with Tommy, and his mother may be the only person alive who can
oblige Dr. Tanaka to do anything. Tommy learns some secrets about his stern
owner that may ruin not just their spa getaway but their whole relationship.

Tommy thought his eyes must be manga-huge as his stern owner simply
smiled and followed his giggling and chattering sister into the kitchen. She
was saying something about men being beasts like her brother so of course
she was not married.
"He cannot resist teasing his sister," said Mrs. Tanaka calmly. "He knows
Mariko is not interested in marriage, and he persists in asking her why she
is still single." She smiled at Tommy. "Perhaps he will stop now he doesn't
have to feel so excluded."
Tommy squirmed. Surely the other shoe would drop and Mrs. Tanaka would start
to scold him for taking away her chance to be a grandmother? Mariko was
probably only a few years younger than Dr. Tanaka, so even if she did marry
soon she was running short on time.
He sighed in relief. His mother-in-law was asking perfectly safe questions
about Tommy's career and family. So long as he didn't blurt out that he used
to be a hooker, stripper, or drag queen, he'd be fine. He babbled about his
Japanese grandmother as the safest option, and somehow found himself talking
about his dead little sister while Mrs. Tanaka patted his hand, and repeated
"so sad, so sad." |
