Conor was hired by the Todd family to keep Gabriel safe and sober. Conor
has done his job so well that Gabriel no longer needs a caretaker, but they
can’t bring themselves to part ways.
Gabriel and Conor live in a comfortable rhythm, pushing and pulling each
other in a cautious dance. Conor doesn't think he's Gabriel's perfect
partner, but Gabriel may have other ideas…

"Is that what you like?" he said, so casually I wondered what he was up
to. "Those big bulky types?"
"Not really," I said. "He probably watches himself in the mirror while
he works out."
Gabriel laughed. "And you want something else than another enormous ego
to deal with."
I said, lulled by the music and his gentle swaying, "I want someone who
makes me laugh. Someone who's interesting and clever and sweet." I
swallowed and looked at my watch again. It had ticked over to midnight
while we talked. "Happy birthday."
"Thank you, Conor." He looked at me, his lashes long and eyes
thoughtful, and closed the tiny distance between us. I felt his breath
on my mouth before his full lips touched mine.
I stopped dancing. I'd daydreamed about Gabriel's mouth many times
before this, wondered if he would taste like water or an apple or
something else entirely, if he'd learned anything from all those kisses
he so recklessly gave away -- but it's one thing to daydream, another to
have your employer, your responsibility, kissing you with his hands in
your hair.
He pulled away far too soon. "For luck," he said and left the chill out
room.
"That's New Year's Eve," I said stupidly and followed. |
