"Hi Mom," Julie said. "Sorry we're a little late, traffic was horrible."
Mrs. Haynes looked just at Julie and said, "Oh, come on in, you must be
freezing out there."
Well, that was a positive thing -- Mom didn't slam the door in their
faces. Once they'd gotten inside, Todd saw his Dad's imposing figure.
"Hi Dad."
"Hi there." Todd noticed that his father wasn't making eye contact with
Shane and he mentally cringed.
Any further conversation was drowned out because Todd's mom started
fussing over his and Julie's coats. Todd noticed that she was avoiding
talking to Shane, so he swallowed and cleared his throat. It was now or
never.
"Mom, Dad?" When she looked up, he bit his lip because the expression on
her face was guarded and tense. He took another deep breath and put a
hand on Shane's shoulder. "This is Shane."
Shane extended his hand. "Nice to meet you, Mr. and Mrs. Haynes."
Both of them shook without saying a word back, which made Todd cringe on
the inside even more. At least his parents weren't treating Shane like
he had the bubonic plague. Yet. |
