Donatien ignores. Chasing after the apparition, he finds evidence of
treachery instead. What tangled web is being woven around his heartbreak?

Luc turned to look him in the face, his playfulness
replaced with genuine concern. "Donatien, are you unwell? Has something
caused you distress?"
Donatien marveled at Luc's handsome features and the way the other man’s
green eyes sparkled under the light. Donatien closed his eyes for a moment
and bent his head so he looked to the floor. He could hide nothing from Luc.
His friend saw through him as though his eyes were the windows to his soul.
How he wanted to scream yes! To tell his closest friend how much he was
distressed, but he couldn't. Not now that Luc was rumored to be engaged, and
certainly not so publicly. Instead, Donatien took a deep breath to regain
his composure. "Is it true?" he dared to ask, unsure if he wanted to hear
the answer. Curious to see Luc's reaction, Donatien met his friend's steady
gaze.
"What?" Luc's smooth forehead creased.
Donatien forced himself to be patient with Luc's ability to play coy. Either
that, or Luc was genuinely obtuse. "That you are engaged?"
Luc smirked, a strange reaction. Donatien believed his friend wouldn't be
smiling if Luc could see how torn up he was inside.
