Jason closed the apartment door behind him, flipping the lock like usual before stamping his boots against the worn welcome mat, shards of ice, snow and rock salt spilling onto the floor all around. He dropped his backpack to the side and started to flip through the collection of mail on the end table.
"Your boyfriend called."
Jason looked up, surprised to find his roommate there. They managed to live together because they were never home at the same time. Otherwise, Jason was pretty sure he'd have to strangle Matt. The guy belched, made inappropriate comments, and partied way more than any Ph.D. candidate should. "Forgot to charge my cell," Jason said, because Cooper rarely called the landline, since Jason spent more time out of his graduate student housing than in it.
Matt rolled his eyes. "He said to tell you not to forget about the gift for your girlfriend. Man, some people can't get one or the other and you have both, you lucky shit. "
"I'm not sharing." Jason grinned before pulling off his boots and skimming past Matt toward the kitchenette. He could use a hot drink. Along the way, he passed the tiny Christmas tree he had gotten at the local Wal-Mart. Matt hadn't even bothered to plug the thing in, so it looked dull and forlorn, standing there covered in plastic gold ornaments.
It was so unlike Cooper and Lexi's apartment, which seemed filled with the Christmas spirit. They had decorated with care, reminding Jason of home, how he and his siblings had taken part in dressing up the house for the holiday. Cooper covered their walls with brightly colored garland wound with Christmas lights. Lexi vetoed the blinking ones, so at least Jason didn't feel like he had walked into a disco every time he came over to visit. She placed the candles everywhere -- long slim tapers in silver candlesticks or short, fat candles that smelled strongly like pine.
Lexi loved her candles and Jason shivered at the thought, remembering how she had poured the wax over his bare chest, catching his nipples under splashes of vanilla scented wax. He couldn't smell vanilla without getting hard, even now. Cooper just watched as she had done it, Jason's arms bound above his head, attached to the rings permanently affixed to their bed. Jason strained against his bonds, but that didn't stop him from moaning when the flare of heat touched his skin. Afterwards, Cooper had been the one to peel off the wax, following the motion with his hot mouth and tongue.
"So what do you get for the girl who has everything? Or at least, two dicks?" Matt interrupted Jason's thoughts, somehow cheapening the whole experience with his words.
"You're an asshole," Jason shot back, hunting around the cabinets for some tea to chase away the cold. He frowned at the decaf store brand box he pulled off the top shelf. Did this thing even have an expiration date? He could really use some of Cooper's mint green tea right about now.
"I'm attempting to live vicariously through you." Matt pouted, dropping onto one of the stools along the counter.
"Then write my dissertation," Jason said. "My life really isn't that interesting."
"Aside from the whole being part of a threesome thing."
"I never should have told you," Jason grumbled as he filled the teapot with cool tap water. Store brand was better than nothing. It lacked the rich scent that filled Cooper and Lexi's place, but then nothing Jason did could compare to the feel of their apartment.
Matt laughed. "You didn't tell me, remember? Cooper gave it away within five seconds of meeting me."
"Remind me not to bring him around here anymore." Who knew what else Cooper would give away? |
