Licensed counselor, Dare Wilson, works with troubled kids, and that's how he meets Ryan Spencer's nephew. The kid is reeling from his mother's death, and Dare wants to help. He wants to help Ryan out, too. Their chemistry is immediate, but Dare knows he cares for Ryan, too. Dare thinks they'll fit right into his quiet life, but he should know better than to think everything will go smoothly.

Suddenly, Dare is involved in a violent domestic violence dispute, a life-threatening situation with a client, and terrible problems with an old employee. Add in a newspaper reporter who makes him headline news, and makes a big deal out of Dare being gay, and all of a sudden, Dare is the one who needs help. Can he and Ryan face all of their problems and make it through together?

Review

Kiernan Kelly, author of In Bear Country II: The Barbary Coast, writes: Darrin Wilson and Ryan Spencer are two men without a lot in common. Darrin, aka Dare, is a counselor who spends his days in an office, working with troubled children and teens. Ryan owns a construction company who often gets his hands (and the rest of him) dirty by working with his crew.

As Dare and Spencer face individual heart wrenching sorrows, they're brought together by a very special little boy – Ryan's young nephew, JC.

Trouble seems to follow Dare like a shadow. His goodhearted nature and sincere desire to help his fellow man seems to continually backfire on him, leading to situations that are both dangerous and discouraging. Through it all, Ryan and JC become his haven, the lifelines that keep him from drowning.

In Dare To, AKM Miles gives us an incredible novel of hope and love that reminds the reader that love's sweetness can temper the most bitter of experiences. Dare and Spencer are wonderful characters, whose time spent between the sheets often left me breathless. JC is a fantastic little boy, one I would have liked to scoop up and take home with me. Together, the three make an ideal family, one you'll be cheering for, and treasuring for a long time to come.

No! Darrin tried to cling to sleep. Ignore it. Cover head with pillow. Now he heard a muffled ringing, damn it. He was going to change the tune on that thing. He was so tired of hearing those irritating, high-pitched tones. He reached over to the table by the bed and cursed again when he knocked the phone onto the floor. Okay! Throw the pillow, scooch over and stretch for the damn thing.

“Gotcha.” He dragged the still singing phone up and put it to his ear. Nothing. Oh yeah, open it.

“’Lo?” he managed, sounding as rumbly as he felt after the three hours sleep he’d gotten.

“Dare? You up?” Well, duh.

“No, Sis. Why are you calling me at the crack of dawn?”

“Dare, it’s eight-thirty. The crack was a couple of hours ago.”

“Okay. Well, since I got to bed at about five-thirty, that means it’s the crack for me. So what’s so important you had to call me this early?”

“You’re not going to like it.”

“I already don’t like it. Tell me now before I wake up.”

He knew he was going to hate what was coming. He knew it was close to their mom’s birthday and that Melanie was going to ask him to do something, something with his mom. Not a good combination, he and his mom.
