Haelan has always led a solitary life, at least until he finds Kagari in the woods near his home. Kagari is a familiar, but has been changed into a young man and abandoned by an uncaring master. Haelan takes Kagari in and finds himself enjoying the boy’s company.

In Haelan, Kagari finds a friend and lover. Despite that, Kagari still feels obligated to return to his master. Can Haelan stop him, or is Kagari destined to spend his life with someone who doesn’t truly want him?

Haelan headed into the meadow. It was the only place in the area open enough for him to get the short running start that he needed to take flight. He broke through the trees in a dead run and opened his wings to the star lit sky. Then, something half-hidden in the tall grass caught his foot and sent Haelan tumbling into a bush.

“I could have broken a wing… or my damned neck.” Haelan picked himself up off the damp ground, brushing bits of grass and dirt from his shirt and the soft leather of his pants. He turned to see what tripped him.

Haelan’s eyes went wide. A young man, maybe twenty summers old, lay in the grass. From the look of things, he had probably gotten lost and collapsed in the grass. His bare feet were battered and his ankle seemed to be swollen. Poor thing must have been running from something. Why else would a human be out here so late? Oh, but you’re not quite human are you? Furry white cat ears peeked through the boy’s raven hair and a long mud splattered tail curled against his thigh.

There was a leather collar buckled tightly around his throat, marking him as someone’s property. Haelan wrinkled his nose, the distinct scent of human magic was all over that pale bruised skin. He had to be a construct or under some sort of wizard’s spell.

At least he was alive, whatever he was. Haelan thanked the gods for that much. The boy’s thin chest rose and fell in slow even breaths and a furry ear twitched slightly beneath Haelan’s fingers. That was all fine and good, but what exactly was Haelan supposed to do with him?
