The night before a job interview in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, geology
professor Steven McCormick has a one-night stand with Zach, a young man he
meets at a bar. When he gets the job and returns to the U.P. a few months
later, he meets Zach again, and the two become friends. They both want more,
but Steven can tell Zach is hiding something, so he's reluctant to open his
heart.
Zach wants to reveal his true self to Steven; however, his clan leader,
Wyatt, has forbidden it. When Steven winds up in a dangerous position during
a mineral-collecting retreat, Zach realizes he can help, but only if he
shifts. Will Zach risk being kicked out of his clan to save the man he
loves?

Steven opened his refrigerator and looked inside. It was after one in
the morning, and his growling stomach wouldn't let him sleep. He sighed,
wishing he'd gone to the grocery store to stock his refrigerator. As it
was, a glass of milk would have to do.
He downed the milk and set the glass on the counter. The growling
ceased, so he returned the jug to the fridge and went back to bed. He
laughed to himself as soon as he lay down and thoughts of Zach entered
his mind.
Even though he may not have acted that way at first, Steven had been
glad to see Zach at the mine. They'd chatted on the phone every evening
since then, and Steven always looked forward to the call. Something
about Zach intrigued him. The guy was intense. He seemed open and
honest, too, and after spending years with a man who'd kept his true
feelings hidden, the honesty was refreshing.
Steven pulled the blankets up to his chin, rolled over onto his side,
and saw a pair of glowing eyes looking at him from the window.
Just a cat.
He closed his eyes and tried to fall asleep, but an incessant scratching
sound prevented that.
Just an annoying cat.
He got up and went to the window, but when he opened it and looked
outside, there was no cat. He sighed, closed the window, and went back
to bed, hoping to get some sleep. He wanted to be well rested for
spending the day with Zach.
The scratching started up again, and then became more of a tap.
Damn cat.
Steven rolled over onto his back, opened his eyes, and saw a naked man
standing there, watching him through the window.
His heart pounded in his chest and he automatically reached for his cell
phone on the nightstand. It figured that he'd have to call the police
shortly after moving to a small town like Houghton when he'd never had
to do it while living in the Detroit area.
Before he could finish dialing 911, the tapping turned into knocking. He
looked at the window again. The man looked familiar. "Zach?"
Steven turned on the light, jumped out of bed, and hurried to the
building entrance. "Zach? What are you doing?" He pulled his own T-shirt
off over his head and wrapped it around Zach's waist.
"Were you calling the police on me?"
"Well, yeah. If I see a naked peeping Tom outside my apartment, of
course I'm calling the cops! Did you drive? You... you didn't come all
the way over here like that, did you? Did somebody do something to you?"
The words rushed out as Steven ushered Zach into the apartment and
quickly closed the door.
