Review

Syd McGinley, author of the Dr. Fell books, writes: Ten stories…and ten ways of losing a cherry.

Cherry offers ten mouth-watering stories edited by M. Rode that explore the tricky question of just how do you navigate that first time? And just what counts as a first time anyway? It’s tough to review this sexy collection without giving too much away -- and I know readers will want to relish losing their cherries along with the characters.

In “No One’s Cherry” by Julia Talbot, Cris is a thirty-something with plenty of sheet time under his belt, but he’s still got some crucial areas of inexperience. Exploring those areas with Glenn makes for a smoking hot read.

Marines! What can be hotter? How about seeing F.B. face what he thinks is his scariest mission ever as he faces a first time with Matt? By turns sweet and sexy, “First of Foot, Right of the Line” by Kiernan Kelly is a delight from start to finish.

If “Nice Girls Do” then what do nice boys do? Mallory Path’s story has everything you could want in a first time and first love story. Including kittens. And yeah, Alan and Taz are very nice boys.

An evocative encounter between a professional courtesan and an emperor’s new lover forms the heart of Kathryn Scannell’s “Lessons.” Delightful, tender, and with carefully crafted world-building this peep into Tengri society makes me hope for more in this universe.

I dare not spoil the twist in “Just Like Him” -- but it’s a good one! Dallas Coleman’s Trent had just trying to be a guy in love, and not, as he says, “trying for his official queer boy rainbow merit badge” but now he’s seeing clearly and is heading back to his country home. Funny, hot, and gasp-making.

We’ve come a long way since 1977, and “Who Shall I Tell?” by Martin Delacroix gives a clear reminder of the distance we’ve traveled. Adam and Jake are two young lawyers at a conservative firm when they take on a gay student group’s pro bono case. Details of the time make a perfect frame for the sex -- and love -- stories that are both sensual and realistic.

Oh boy! Rodeos! BA Tortuga brings us a scorcher as Beau Lafitte -- a little Cajun bastard -- helps Sam Bell calm down after an unfair loss in “File Gumbo.” Two hot cowboys and a bag of Funyuns, candles and Little Debby cakes is one wild ride. Funny and raunchy.

So what are you going to do when you both thought the other was a bottom? Good thing Aaron is a vet and Nathan is a farm boy -- they soon figure out how animals determine who the alpha male is. Taylor Lockland’s “Alpha Male, Beta Male” has barnyard wrestling, al fresco screwing, and is down and dirty!

“Different Strengths” by JL Merrow takes us to the least expected of places for this collection: a tittie bar and a big old homophobe to keep us company. Don’t worry -- the bouncer will keep us safe -- or will he? Erotic, yes, but there’s more to this encounter than sex, and there’s several levels of satisfaction by the time this cherry is popped good.

And to end with a bang: “Graduation” by Sean Michael (say no more!) shows the importance of not letting chances be missed – even if you grab for them at the very last minute. Bobby nearly lets Neil get away, but he shows up to find his old roommate. Has he left it too late to set things right?

M. Rode has pulled together a creative, funny, moving and arousing collection. Even once you’ve popped your cherry, you’ll go back for a second bite.

From No One's Cherry
Julia Talbot

"I am not a virgin." Crispin wasn't anywhere near a virgin in theory, reality, or even physical proximity. He was at his friend Marc's Rainbow Barbeque party. There was no such thing as a virgin among Marc's favorite flamers.

"You so are." Marc toasted him with a glowing green margarita, which looked unnatural as hell. "You're a cherry."

"Marc, I was married for ten years. There's no way I can be a cherry." Crispin was thirty-two years old. He'd been in the army. No cherry.

"Yes, yes. Women." Marc flapped his free hand. "You got divorced because you were gay, and you've never so much as touched another dick. Ergo, virgin."

"Hey, I can't help it if the only fruity thing about me is my name." He didn't set off gaydars, or so he was told. Hell, he was damned manly, especially compared to Marc's buddies. Crispin had to admit he liked his men as manly as him. "You know how I feel about that. Until I can find a guy..."

"Who can take you and make you like it. Yes, darling, but that means you'll never get laid. Look at you. You're huge!"

He was not huge, either. But at six-one and two-hundred pounds of sold muscle, Crispin knew he could be a little intimidating. He wasn't a size queen or anything. He just had to stay in shape for his job.

Still, Marc's frank admiration made him flex a little.

"So not a virgin."

"So very much so." Marc glanced around, eyes lighting up when they landed on something beyond Crispin's shoulder. "Glenn! Come here a moment, love. I have a question to pose to you."

Crispin rolled his eyes before he turned around, expecting to see another skinny little queen with perfect hair, like most of Marc's friends turned out to be.

Glenn was so not one of those.
