, paperback Hidden in plain view, taboo lovers bond in ways mundane eyes cannot see. When two are not enough, "Bite Me" shows how three can seal their truest carnal connections. When Needed, by Sean Michael, starts off with Jen, whose two faithful canine companions might be more than they seem. In Like a Thousand Miles of Fire, Marie Carlson's half-demon Crystal Andraya finds strength in the arms of her vampire lovers as war between their races looms. In Joyce Sully's Roll Up, a joyless student falls for a sideshow huckster and a cannibal queen.
In Julia Talbot's Changing Shifts, Dave has to explain to his roommates why he's suddenly shunning sunlight. Mercy Loomis unmasks a vampire demon in Empusa, whose lovers don't usually live to tell the tale. A different kind of mystery hooks Monica in CC Bridges' Dog Days. Her best friend has disappeared, and the two strangers who show up in her life have secrets they want to keep.
In Giselle Renarde's Shadow People, PI Anna Fairclough is chosen to investigate the elusive Inuit Shadow People. Vic Winter's Owen thinks he might be crazy when he finds a strange woman in the park, but his lover Tommy knows what to do. In This Home We Defend, by J Rocci, Zev unwittingly brings his pack into danger when a new Alpha issues an unusual challenge. Finally, in A Family Business, by BA Tortuga, Kit has a hard time juggling the family demon hunting business with two vampire lovers.

When Needed
By Sean Michael
She knew she shouldn't have taken this job.
Jen shook her head and gritted her teeth and tried to get her hands free of the rope.
She'd known she should have said no from the moment she heard Dirty Bob's voice on the phone. They called him Dirty Bob not as a commentary on his hygiene, but due to the fact that he played dirty. The man would as soon sell his aged grandmother for medical testing as feed her.
Still, Jen was low on cash and needed the bounty. And hell, the man she was after was named Valentine Dillflower. How hard could it be to catch a man named Valentine Dillflower?
A lot harder, it turned out, than she'd anticipated.
The man was cagier than a bear with a sore paw and sure knew how to tie a knot.
She kept working at the rope around her wrists as well as she could, but it was hard, what with her hands being behind her back and all.
She didn't know where her pups were, either. JC and Spook had been right with her up to the point that someone had clocked her in the back of the head and left her dazed and confused. If Dillflower hurt one hair on their furry bodies, he'd have a lot more to worry about than the charges he faced.
She stopped moving for a long moment, listening, trying to figure out if she was alone or not. It was dark, and the place was large. A warehouse, probably, which meant that there were lots of places for Dillflower, or anyone else for that matter, to be hiding.
It sounded quiet enough, though.
She whistled softly, the low tweet tweet tweet that was JC's call and the longer tweeeet tweet that was Spook's.
Jen heard the rustle in the shadows, so she whistled again.
Come on, boys, show me you're alive.
She'd had them for four years now, her strays. They were protectors, companions, good luck charms; she didn't know what she'd do now without them. Big and fuzzy, toothy and wonderful, those two boys were her best friends.
Suddenly she heard something sliding behind her.
"JC? Spook? Is that you, boys?" Maybe they could chew through the ropes -- she sure as hell wasn't getting anywhere trying to undo or wiggle out of them.
It was JC who slid out of the shadows, panting heavily.
"Oh, baby. Come here, JC. There's a good boy."
JC came up, leaned into her calves, the big, fuzzy head on her thigh.
She tugged at her hands, wanting more than anything to pet him. "I'm so glad you're okay, JC." She crooned softly to him. "Where's Spook? Is he here, too?"
Fingers landed on her wrists, working the ropes, startling her badly. She gasped and twisted, trying to see who was behind her. Whoever he was, he was tall and broad, with wild silver and black hair.
JC didn't so much as growl. Which meant he wasn't a threat; she trusted JC with her life.
"Who are you?" she hissed. |
