Sam met his eyes in the mirror, then looked down at the gem at Benedict’s throat. “A very rare thing. Beautiful, really.” His hands were still on Benedict’s shoulders, and for a moment, neither of them moved. It was an electric moment, just a brief spark that made Benedict think if he just turned round and closed his eyes, just leaned in a little, he could…

Then Sam coughed and turned away. “Yes, well. I’m not really the city’s leading expert on gems, so I won’t give you a valuation at the moment, in case it turns out to be something else entirely, or, like poor quality, so I don’t want to get your hopes up, or, you know…”

Benedict turned round. “Look, do you want to get a drink?” he blurted out, shocked at his own boldness.

Sam stopped babbling and stared at him. “Are you asking me out?”

Benedict’s cheeks flamed and he looked at the floor. Sam was married, he reminded himself, and what was all that about not being someone’s dirty little secret again? Would he ever learn?
