Excerpt: Coffee Kisses by Margaret Leigh
Lorraine stopped and leaned on the balustrade, gazing out across the bay to where a local refinery and gas storage plant were illuminated by amber lights. "It's so pretty," she sighed.
"I'll bet it's not a patch on Sydney Harbour."
"Oh, the harbor's nice in its own way, but it's too crowded," she said. "This seems -cleaner, somehow.
I couldn't argue with that. I stepped next to her and we both gazed at the view.
"I envy you," her voice was a murmur on the sea breeze.
"What?"
Lorraine sighed. "Nothing," she shook her head. "I just get pensive when I am near the sea." She half-turned to face me and her hand brushed against mine. Then, without my really knowing who moved first, she was in my arms, her lips a breath away from mine.
I watched as her shimmering lips parted and then I was kissing her. Her mouth was as sweet as I had imagined it would be, the gloss made her lips slide against mine in a way that made my whole body tingle. I pulled her closer, so soft and warm and melting against me and I never wanted this to stop.
The human brain is hopelessly dependent on oxygen, and it was that dependency that drove us apart, panting for breath a few moments later.
Lorraine smiled at me, making no attempt to pull out of my arms. I let my breath out on a sigh and tightened my arms around her as we turned our heads to look at the view. It was the perfect place for a first kiss, I decided. After a while, it became the perfect place for a second and a third kiss as well.
She shivered a little when I pulled back for the third time. I looked into her eyes, "Cold?"
"A bit," she said. "Although how I could be, right now, is a mystery." She pressed closer and I rubbed her bare arms with my hands.
"Let's go back up," I said. "We could get a coffee or something at one of the bistros."
She nodded and we headed back up to the town.
